The continuously increasing processor performance and the entering of standard PC technology into the world of embedded controls result in the fact that today nearly all PLCs are high-performance controls. However, in future the performance will not be the only unique selling proposition: Due to the use of Microsoft.NET, entirely new possibilities become available in the field of engineering software. And, in consequence of the manufacturer-independent programming interface, the same applies to the runtime system within automation devices.
