Software components - The requirements to software components as part of parameterizable or programmable safety systems (PLCs, Drives) increased in a drastic way due to the IEC 61508.

During the past, software played a minor part regarding certification. Normally, only functional aspects were considered. But now, having the IEC 61508, the structure of the software, the measures and technologies within the software used for avoiding and handling errors and breakdowns have become an integral part of the certification checkup. Older software tools, used in the context of safety technology, only met in a few cases the demands of today's quality standards and safety requirements defined by the IEC 61508. In future, this aspect should be a decision criterion for machine and system manufacturers when choosing a safety system.
