Motion control and PLC are merging

Motion control nowadays is a must for the target applications when a complete solution is required. The reasons are obvious: Key functions are realized via motion control, e.g. packaging and assembly machines. Mechanical coordination of movements is replaced more and more by electronic, programmable solutions. Apart from being significantly more reliable and maintenance-free, the result above all is flexibility with regard to adjustment to new products which are manufactured or further processed in such a machine.

Status quo: PLCopen standard and integration

Motion control so far has been solved by each manufacturer in a proprietary way, with specific approaches by each supplier. This situation resulted in high costs for development and maintenance and triggered the efforts of the PLCopen to define a standard for the programming of motion controls.

The result: A library of PLC function blocks was defined for motion control, which enables PLC programmers to cover PLC and motion functionality at the same time with an IEC 61131 application.

At the same time, today's complexity of the applications and the newly defined standardization demand an integrated solution: Programming of the sequence control and the motion control should be integrated into one system and reduce efforts and costs this way!

SoftMotion solution by KW-Software

With the SoftMotion solution, KW-Software has fulfilled both requirements: Support of the required standards and integration of PLC programming and motion control.

We call this solution ProConOS^® Win MC, our PLC runtime system variant with motion control.

Soft PLC with PLCopen motion control kernel for Windows^® XP and CE.
Full support of the PLCopen standard and the defined motion control function blocks, defined by the standard.
Support of the SERCOS standard including corresponding firmware libraries for parameterization, configuration and control of the SERCOS bus subscribers.

We provide the possibility to motion control manufacturers to couple an own motion control kernel with our runtime system ProConOS via standard interfaces.
Customer-specific MC kernel
We supply the support of KW-Software and our partners Eckelmann and ISG for the development of a customer-specific MC kernel and for the implementation of the PLCopen MC blocks.
