Hard real-time under Linux/RTAI In the past, Linux has successfully provided proof of its industrial capability regarding stability and availability in an enormous number of server and communication applications. This reference, combined with its hardware independence (as it is a Unix derivate), its availability as open source code (this means manufacturer-independence) and furthermore the given support of all common standards, makes Linux to appear as an attractive alternative in the field of automation. |

| But what about the hard real-time capability of Linux? With RTAI, the Real-Time Application Interface, a version is now available that combines the advantages of Linux with the real-time requirements of the automation industry, ranging in the range of milliseconds.
Under RTAI, hard real-time can be achieved by implementing time-critical applications as kernel mode in the real-time space and, at the same time, executing each time-uncritical functionality (such as parameterization tasks) as normal Linux program in the user space. Via communication interfaces, data can be exchanged between both spaces. The algorithms processed in the user space are subjected to all protection mechanisms of the operating system. In contrast, the real-time algorithms are executed directly in the kernel space of the system, similar to device drivers. KW-Software is a member of the initiative OSADL The Open Source Automation Development Lab (OSADL) wants to become the "center of gravity" of the technological development of Linux and other open source technologies for the automation industry. The aim is to develop a Linux version, which provides hard real-time in the user space. |
